"I recently taught a "once-a-week journaling class" to a group of "women in crisis." The first week they were surprised at how easy it was, the second week, they were surprised at how much change it had made in their lives, and by the third week, they were using such words as "miracles" and "I never before..." to describe the effect it had on their lives." Kathleen Spring, director.

one of our students journaling Journaling, Memoirs and Biographies

Offered 4-day weekends
May to September/October

A relaxed student

Our director can help you decide if it is journaling, memoirs or biographies that you are interested in. We assist you in first defining what your objective is. Students receive instructions, do writing exercises in and out of class, and go home with an outline of how to continue either thier self-help journaling or their life stories that they began at the workshop. (See more below, "Workshop Outline"). This may consist of writing a story about someone's life, or learning to use daily journaling for self-healing and self-discovery.

What is the difference between memoirs and biographies?
Memoirs are memories of events and/or feelings in our life. Biographies are actual events, which may involve doing research, interviews, and collecting objects and photographs. It's is similar to the concepts of dreaming vs. reality. Dreaming is based on reality, but is an interpretation of it.

What is the difference between a diary and journaling?
The power of journaling is accessible to anyone who desires self-directed change... Neither one requires special writing skills, only a willingness to express honestly the joys, despairs and spiritual discoveries of life. A diary is usually a day-to-day record of what happens in your life. A journal, while also written in present tense, takes your story one step further, and enables you to become reflective. You are not restricted to your own life story, but can include dreams, nature or observations. Journaling guides you into interpreting your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health and wellness.

We can guide you on how to interpret your journaling, organize your biographical material, and/or inspire and direct your recollection of memoirs. This can be done as a private writing session (more intense learning), or combined with a Wellness Retreat (more casual and experimental). Learn how to not just "transcribe" the story, but "translate" it.

"Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want." ...Margaret Young
Use journaling to find out "who you really are" and "what you really want"

journal penIN DEPTH JOURNALING

June 13 to 16; July 11 to 14, August 8 to 11, 2008.
In-depth journaling could change your life! Find out what's been keeping you back. Uncover hidden motivations. Discover your true thoughts and aspirations. Or, bring a problem with you that you wish to resolve. You will receive instructions for in-class exercises, as well as receive guidance on how to carry on this work once you return home. Many of our students bring with them a problem they have been trying to figure out (eg, how they can get over hating their son's wife); and we spend significant time on analyzing it, and working toward a positive outcome. We find that people often feel a "calling" to do the workshop for a problem they have buried and think they have resolved. Listen to your intuition, and see if this is right for you. The workshop includes an optional trip to Lilly Lake in Rocky Mt. National Park, or Meadow Park along the St. Vrain River. (If you want to write a biography or memoir, see comments below and on our Creative Writing page)

Author, "Prayer is Good Medicine and Healing Words."

Tentative Workshops

Aimed at bringing more "springtime" into our lives, year round

southern smells CREATING A NEW WORLD (NEW ORLEANS AND LOCAL PLANTATIONS) Tentatively scheduled for late fall 2008; approx. one week.
We are bringing back our workshop to Louisiana. It was cancelled the last couple of years due to Katrina. We will be doing some journaling, and staying at luxurious lodging on a couple of plantations, with daily half-day tours, including: a "ghost tour", a day tour of New Orleans, and other unique sights. Free time is included for you to do antique shopping in this historically rich area. We will also be visiting the reconstruction area, and doing a ceremony to bring more "love from the heart" to the recovering area. Please let us know if you are interested in this workshop; and we will keep you informed.

bldg-tour SOUTHWEST ARCHITECTURE Tentatively scheduled for early spring 2009; approx. one week.
Our tour centers around the delightfully hot spot of Phoenix, Arizona. You will find numerous spectacular examples of southwest architecture and art in this area, and you are guaranteed a sunny sky! (during the bleak winter days). The (light) journaling on this trip will involve some "visual" journaling and analysis. Frank Lloyd Wright's name is all over the area, including the Biltmore hotel (Phoenix), and the acoustically perfect hall that was designed by him, Gammage, where you will enjoy a live performance. Enjoy the contemporary Historical Museum, the Botanical Gardens (with 50,000 desert plants), early "architecture" by the prehistoric Hohokam Indians. With many evening venues to frolic in like the Rawhide Western Town or the Waterfront park, and a surprising IKEA Restaurant, with, yes, Swedish cruisine. We will be staying at the quaint Twin Palms, a renovated B&B style hotel, with noteworthy architecture of its own. Of course, the highlight of the trip will be Taliesin West; with private behind the scene tours . Wright had an east and a west workshop, and Taliesin West was the western one, open in the winter months, as well as his winter home. Today the School of Architecture is still open, and the facility is used as the headquarters of the Wright Foundation. Please write us if you are interested in this trip.

Our "FINDING YOUR MISSION IN LIFE" workshop is on hiatus this year, to make room for the new workskops. === Most of our workshops involve self-analysis and clarification of goals.

What You Will Learn ...Your Choices ...
at the Journaling Workshop

We begin on the first day with the basics. The Journaling Process By going over the "basics" of journaling, you will always have a place to start. If you have a "block", you can refer to these guidelines. Then, once your pen starts rolling, your creativity will kick in.

If you still are having problems, it may not be what we traditionally think of as "writer's block". It might be your inner self trying either block a bad memory or trying to get you to face something. If you start to write about one thing, but something else keeps popping up, stop, and write about that other thing now! And, continue writing about it until you completely run out of things to say about it. Take a good 20 minutes. You will be amazed at the results. Write next in your journal what you concluded from reviewing the written material, and what you will do about it.

Take Your Biography Chapter by Chapter one chapter at a time

Some of our students come to us because they feel they have a book they must write; a story about themselves or someone else that they want to share with their larger family or the world. They bring material based on life stories of a courageous family member, or a family history they want to record in an entertaining, but accurate way. For these students, we will guide them in chapter outlines and content; and, how to develop characters. Karl Jung established the first criteria for "archetype" characters: what all stories contain. EG: matriarch, hero, etc. If this is your area of interest, please check out our description of the Creative Writing Workshop page.

Individualized Guidance

Bring material of your own area of interest, and get advice on how to piece it together into a coherent, memorable article or series of journaling exercises. Or, bring a problem you have been carrying around with you. You can discuss this with our director before you come. Because our workshops only have one to three students, you will receive personalized instruction and grasp useful personal insights.

Insight and Life Changing Aspects:

Journaling has been successfully used to help people look more deeply into their life style and choices, and it is an effective means of changing these patterns for the better, through self knowledge. As a Holistic Health Professional and a professional writer, your director can assist you in learning how to use your journaling to benefit your body, mind and spirit. You will get fresh insight into your life during this weekend session, and learn how to continue this work at home.
"I'm not going to tell the story the way it happened, I'm going to tell the story the way I remember it." ...Charles Dickens, "Great Expectations"

Books on Journaling

There are dozens of books on journaling. Some talk about including sketches, others include photographs, and more. When you come to the workshop, we can talk to you about books that would suit your purposes, to help you build on what you learn at our workshop. In the meantime, check out these unique, fascinating, informative web sites -and- books we have personally picked for your enjoyment and education. See "Journaling Page 2"
